How many plotlines are too many?

Asked by: Anna Wilson

This is probably going to be around 2-3, plus a few smaller ones, although what you really consider a plotline may affect this. Really, the only limit on plotlines is how many can be understood at once. Don’t confuse the readers, and definitely don’t confuse you, and you’ll be fine.

How many plotlines should a book have?

When writing a novel, you need to use more than one plotline. In fact, most successful books need at least three. If they only have one or two, the story will feel flat, bloated, or repetitive, because the writer doesn’t have adequate variety to draw from. But it’s not enough to just pick any three plotlines.

What does it mean if a story has multiple plotlines?

How many plots and subplots should a novel have?

Most stories have at least 2 or 3 subplots, and can have more. But you don’t want them to take AWAY from the main storyline, only add to it! The first 8-10 pages of your second act is where your main character will face their first major test or challenge and take the first step in their arc.

What is the B story in a novel?

Does every story need a twist?

Generally speaking, they are not necessary, but they are making the ride more… thrilling. On the other hand, a good thrill ride would likely have loops, but it’s not the number and size of them that makes the ride good. So, put twists in your story, but don’t add twists just for the sake of it.

What makes a good twist?

Ensure your twist is believable and necessary – and makes sense. While plot twists, by definition, are sudden, unexpected and even shocking changes of direction, they must still be realistic and sensible. No matter how unpredictable it might be, a plot twist that’s outlandish or doesn’t make sense is not effective.
