How to write a character that doesn’t talk much?

How do you write a partially mute character?

If they are in first person, you could differentiate their thoughts from their lines by using italic or quote marks (depending on your writing system). If they are not, you could describe their expressions, body language or anything that can be described to show how the character was feeling in that moment of mutism.
