Is it confusing for English speakers to see mixed tenses in narration?

What tense should be used in narration?

In written stories, past tense narration is more traditional and has been used more frequently than present tense narration. However, present tense narration has become much more common in recent decades.

Is a narrative written in past tense?

You can use either present or past tense for telling your stories. The present tense is often associated with literary fiction, short stories, students in writing programs and workshops, and first novels. The past tense is used in most genre novels.
