Plagiarism vs. reference?

Asked by: Alisha Thompson

Referencing is when you acknowledge other peoples’ work and allow the reader to locate the sources you have used. Plagiarism happens when a student submits an assignment that contains work that is not their own, without acknowledging their sources in the form of references.

Is it plagiarism if you reference?

If you do not intend to quote directly from the source, you must write about it in your own words. Using too many words from the original source is plagiarism, even if you provide a reference.

What is the difference between poor referencing and plagiarism?

Inaccurate references or, worse still, no references at all, can be regarded as plagiarism. An unreferenced assignment implies every word, idea and fact is your own work. Referencing is a way to provide evidence to support the assertions and claims in your own assignments.

How do you reference without plagiarism?

How do you avoid plagiarizing? Give the author of the material credit by ” documenting” or ” citing” your sources (terms which mean you credit your source). Give credit whenever you use a direct quote by placing it in quotation marks and giving the author credit.

Is it plagiarism if you copy and paste but cite the source?

Anytime you copy and paste verbatim from a source and do not give the source credit it is plagiarism. If you do copy and paste a passage word for word, you must put the information in quotations (i.e. ” “) marks and give credit to the author. This is called a direct quote.

Is paraphrasing considered plagiarism?

Paraphrasing is plagiarism if your text is too close to the original wording (even if you cite the source). If you directly copy a sentence or phrase, you should quote it instead. Paraphrasing is not plagiarism if you put the author’s ideas completely in your own words and properly cite the source.

Does citing reduce plagiarism?

If you’ve properly paraphrased or quoted and correctly cited the source, you are not committing plagiarism. However, the word correctly is vital. In order to avoid plagiarism, you must adhere to the guidelines of your citation style (e.g. APA or MLA).

What happens if you don’t reference properly?

Citations also show that you have done the proper research work and that you’ve consulted appropriate texts for your assignment. Failure to cite basically means that you are claiming that the entire paper and all of its information as yours and, if that’s untrue, it’s plagiarism.

Is it plagiarism if you use your own work twice?

Can you plagiarize yourself? Yes, reusing your own work without acknowledgment is considered self-plagiarism. This can range from re-submitting an entire assignment to reusing passages or data from something you’ve turned in previously without citing them.

What percentage of plagiarism is acceptable?

Answer: There is a lack of consensus or clear-cut-rules on what percentage of plagiarism is acceptable in a manuscript. Going by the convention, usually a text similarity below 15% is acceptable by the journals and a similarity of >25% is considered as high percentage of plagiarism.

Does Turnitin count references?

Remember, Turnitin counts anything in your work which matches another source as unoriginal: so, e.g., if you have used a quotation – in quote marks and correctly attributed – this will be counted as unoriginal material.

Is Grammarly a good plagiarism checker?

Quality of matches

Grammarly was able to detect some instances of plagiarism, but struggled with the more heavily-edited texts. In most cases, the tool was able to find the right source, but the matches were only partial, not highlighting the entire plagiarized section.
