Guidelines for writing Poems, Stories and Tales

Pros ans cons of writing a plot based on the present and past tense (character’s point of view)?

Asked by: Becky Jian

What are the advantages and disadvantages of writing in the past tense?

It’s easier to make a non-linear story when you’re writing about past events without the use of flashbacks. Doing this properly can lead to a stronger story telling experience and can feel more fluid or natural than it does in present tense. Past tense is the more traditional of the tenses.

Is it better to write a story in present or past tense?

Present tense has more “immediacy” than past tense.

Past-tense narration is of course “immediate” in a way, since the events of the characters’ past are happening in the reader’s present. But the immediacy of the present tense also allows us to convey a character’s change as it happens, not after the fact.

What are the disadvantages of writing in present tense?

Present Tense Con: Everyday Details

Much more so than past tense, present tense novels tend to waste time explaining what characters are eating, how they made their food, the order of operations of their shower, how they choose their clothes, the process of commuting from one place to another, etc.

What are the advantages of writing in past tense?

Writing a story in past tense allows you to manipulate time, to reveal, and to conceal events. Past-tense fiction creates a more subtle kind of suspense where we may know the outcome of the story but we want to know how and why we ended up there. This is good for more cerebral, reflective characters.

What is the benefit of writing in the present tense?

It creates a sense of immediacy: Writing in the present tense makes it feel as though the events of the novel are happening in real time. This can help the reader feel an immediate connection to a first person narrator, since we witness the life events and emotional transformations of the POV character as they happen.

Why is it bad to write in past tense?

One main reason is simply that it’s the convention. Reading stories in past tense is so normal that reading present tense narratives can feel jarring and annoying to many readers. Some readers, in fact, won’t read past the few pages if your book is in present tense.

Is Harry Potter written in past tense?

It’s written in the past tense about events in Harry’s recent past and how they will affect his future (in the past)! With the context I see I was reading it the wrong way. This separation from his spellbooks had been a real problem for Harry, because his teachers at Hogwarts had given him a lot of holiday work.

Can you mix past and present tense in a story?

It is not advisable to mix past and present tense in a story. It is good practice to avoid switching tenses during a scene or within the same paragraph unless doing so is essential for clarity. Switching tenses can be jarring to the reader and make the story hard to follow.

Can you mix past and present tense?

The bottom line is this: there is no restriction on what tenses we can use and mix within a sentence, as long as they are appropriate for the context.

What does writing in the past tense mean?

When people write or speak using the past tense, they’re describing something that happened earlier, whether it was yesterday or ten years ago.

Why is past tense used in literature?

Therefore, when you write about writers or artists as they express themselves in their work, use the present tense. The Basic Rule: You should use the past tense when discussing historical events, and you should use the literary present when discussing fictional events.
