What makes a character a RIP OFF?
One similarity is pure chance, two might be a coincidence, three are homage … four is a copy. Think deeply who those characters are. What’s their purpose, what they mean, what’s their role to play in the story.
How do you not rip a character?
Answer: The key is to change enough of the external traits that the character is not immediately recognizable. You can likely keep many of the internal traits, including the angst. For instance, the Phantom inhabits an opera and has a passion and talent for music.
