What is the correct location for page numbers in a report?

Asked by: Adrian Everett

When printing single-sided, this means put them in the top right corner. When printing double-sided, this means put them in the top right corner on odd numbered pages, and top left corner on even numbered pages. Putting the page number at the top puts it in a spot where people will quite naturally look.

Where do page numbers go in a report?

Page numbers should either appear near the outer margin of the page (in the lower or upper corner) or be centered at the bottom or top of the page. 3) There is no need to add numbers to blank pages.

Where are page numbers normally located?

Page numbers are usually placed in the header, footer, or side margin. When you need to number some pages differently, Word allows you to restart page numbering.

Should page numbers be on the left or right?

The actual number of pages in the book should end on an even number. Left side pages should be even numbered and right side pages should be odd numbered. Blank pages (i.e. end sheets) should be included in the number of pages on your quote.

Where does the page number start in a book?

Page numbers (called folios) should start with the first page of text as page 1. If you have excessive front matter (e.g., a six-page foreword), use lower-case roman numerals (i, ii, iii…) to number the front matter. Page numbers should be placed at the outer margin of the running header.

Where do page numbers start in a magazine?

For magazines, the first recto after the cover is usually page 1; newspapers, the front page is page 1; other publications, “it depends.” Academic publications and professional journals usually have very specific style guides that you would follow.

Where does page 1 begin in a book?

Page numbering

Page 1 is normally the first page of the first chapter. The preceding pages (the frontmatter) should use Roman numerals (i, ii, iii, etc.)

How do book page numbers work?

If the front matter is extensive and a second half-title page is included, it is to be numbered as page 1 and its verso as page 2. If a part title is included, it is to be included in the same numbering as the text. Page numbers do not appear on part titles.
