When is it okay to say the word “now” in a past tense story?

Can you use the word now when writing past tense?

‘Now’ can be used with the past tense to create a sense of immediacy or to refere to a point in a series of events, akin to ‘then’. The sentence you provide sounds perfectly correct to me. On an afterthought, why do you claim you can’t write in the past?

What tense should I use when telling a story?

You can use either present or past tense for telling your stories. The present tense is often associated with literary fiction, short stories, students in writing programs and workshops, and first novels. The past tense is used in most genre novels.

Is are being correct?

Yes, it’s correct. As Barri mentioned it’s a passive construction. We use the passive construction when when are more interested in the action.



Had been Versus were?

‘ The past perfect form had been is sometimes used in the sense of ‘in case’ or ‘suppose. ‘ Were implies that an action is already completed as it is simple past, but had been implies that an action was going on in the said period of the past when it is used in the past perfect continuous tense.
